Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (2004) by Ro D — 24 Mar 2011
A peculiar one, this. Filmed over a 17-year period, Coffee and Cigarettes combines several short segments which are connected in no way other than that everyone drinks coffee and smokes cigarettes. It's shot in black and white, the same colours of the addictive substances the characters consume.
The third short film, "Somewhere in California", hilariously features Iggy Pop and Tom Waits who smoke to celebrate that they've quit smoking, drink coffee and make awkward conversation.
While it's not terribly consistent (a few of the segments drag on for a bit) there's some odd charm to it, and it's worth watching for the countless numbers of celebrity cameos (among them, Steve Buscemi, Bill Murray, Robert Benigni, Cate Blanchett, Steve Coogan and The White Stripes) and the stylish overhead shots of crowded coffee tables, the central driving force of the film.
