Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (2004) by Ryan H — 27 Feb 2012
Jim Jarmusch makes a series of shorts that feels pretty self-indulgent after a while. "Hey, check it out, no matter what, people are just people who smoke cigarettes and drink coffee." We are all related somehow.
The reason I give it 3 stars is because I never really disliked it, but I never really loved it or felt captured by it either. Cate Blancett surprisingly didn't bother me. Bill Murray was as great as I expected.
It played out like the stories you here of Bill Murray with "no one will believe you." Iggy Pop and Tom Waits have a good segment where Iggy seems like a guy who is not so sure of himself and doesn't know how to talk to Tom Waits.
It's kinda similar to the segment with Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan. I think Molina and Coogan's might be my favorite one, mainly because they are just so funny and worked off each other really well.
But the film as a whole never really sparks. It's just one long note. Paris Je'Taime worked better for me because it plays with the same idea in different ways. Even though it has a limit, it's full of ideas.
This seemed to be pretty limited all around. I was waiting for it to open up and take off, but it never quite did. Some people will love it for that, others will hate it. I was simply okay with it.
