Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (1987) by John H — 09 Jul 2008
Great. I enjoyed every segment. The only thing I didn't like was the repetition of smears against Elvis, which were handles with particular misunderstanding. One girl in an early scene, when talking about Elvis "ripping off" black people's music mentions Otis Blackwell as one of the artists he ripped off.
Otis Blackwell was black, but he was also a songwriter who wrote songs (very good ones) specifically for Elvis. Elvis's recording of them led to Blackwell's becoming a very wealthy man. I don't think he would consider that being ripped off.
