Review of Coffee and Cigarettes (1987) by Sarah A — 09 Jul 2009
I really wanted to like it, I really did, but for some reason I couldn't quite grasp the concept of this film. The film is about different groups of people having deep and sometimes pointless conversations with one another(the actors literally play themselves in alot of scenes).
Though some of the scenes are intertwined with one another(usually through conversation topics), the film fails to make itself nothing more than a fragmented peice of art that would have been(at least in my opinion) better if it were a play.
Coffee and Cigarettes does have its High points, some of the scenes are brilliantly acted, the scene where Cate Blanchett plays two different characters in the same scene is absolutely brilliant. Overall Coffee and Cigarettes is still an occasionally enjoyable movie (even if some of the scenes do seem to drag on much longer than they should) it should be noted that this is a very low budget indie-film, one that took almost 17 years to make (one of the scenes was filmed 16 years before the film was released), Coffee and Cigarettes may not be very enjoyable for casual movie-goers, but for anyone thats trying to study good improvisation, or method acting, this is a good movie to watch.
