Review of Code 46 (2003) by Christopher V — 20 Mar 2005
[font=Franklin Gothic Medium]Enough to provoke thought and to question our humanity but is not strong enough to lead us on to care about the characters or hold up any kind of praise. Code 46 is interesting to watch as it tries desperately to catch our eyes and be that artsy brilliance of a masterpiece. Ultimately it fails. The beginning through out the middle of the movie leads you on to questions that lead to more questions that go unanswered long enough to be deemed annoying and intolerable. The ending does display however, a certain glimpse into a future that's not so unreal as you begin to ponder on the compassion of the government and the compassion (control maybe?) of the citizens who elect that government. Code 49 is mildly entertaining but nothing to take too seriously.
Performances:
Tim Robbins- OK, this goes to show that ALL ACTORS MAKE MISTAKES, even the brilliant ones like Tim Robbins. Don't get me wrong, no one could have done for the character Tim plays better or even as well as Tim Robbins had done. Tim Robbins was perfect for the role. He did an excellent job.
Samantha Morton- You can tell she is working as an actress and doesn't truly convince you of anything. You know she's trying to lead you somewhere but yet you know that not even she herself knows exactly WHERE she's taking you. She lacks the ability to hold audiences' interest, her eyes dull the character. Her best scene is the last one where it finally looks as if through out the movie it has changed her in some way or has affected her. She lacks responsive emotions and deep feeling.
The best part of the movie: The soundtrack.
The worst part of the movie: The script, it had great potential and might have gone further if the script had more attention. There really is a great foundation for a great film, however the script and perhaps even the directing was a bit weaker than the actors' performances.
Acting: 3/10 (Without Tim Robbins who knows where it would stand??).
Writing: 2/10.
Directing: 3/10.
-Oculus.
