Review of Cocoon (1995) by Mark D — 03 Jun 2009
Considering that this is supposedly a family movie, it seems odd that there's so much sex involved. I mean, these old geezers, as soon as they start to feel rejuvenated, the first thing they can think of is to get their rocks off. And young Jack, upon discovering that his new friend is an alien by spying on her while she's undressing, can barely wait to try alien sex.
One of the first things he says to her is, "I'm not just trying to nail you, I really want to get to know you." And doesn't that sound sooooooo sincere? I should think any Earth woman who heard that from a guy would laugh herself sick.
In the end, all the old folks go off to enjoy eternal life on another planet. Which seems like it should be nice for them, but I often wonder if people have really considered what an eternity is like. As a mere mortal, at least you can look forward to retiring from your boring and/or soul-destroying job at 65 or so. Can you imagine having to do it forever?
And what about the ramifications for poor Jack, who now has to try to explain to the authorities what happened to his boatload of geriatrics, and how he managed to get away himself, but couldn't save a single one of them. In the real world, I think Jack is in for a LOT of trouble.
