2: Nice little picture, but the third act leaves something to be desired. Whoever thought of combining an Florida retirement community with aliens from outer space got it right. What's even better, Ron Howard is a great choice as director and the cast is practically ideal.

It's strange to see Hume Cronyn at such an advanced age, particularly playing a character he rarely got to play when he was younger, at least as far as I remember. I think of him as a devious and power hungry foil to the main protagonist.

It's a kind-hearted and optimistic feel good film along the same line as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. As the film progresses, it becomes more and more obvious why the filmmakers choose to combine a retirement community with an aliens from outer space theme.

It works quite well up to a point; it then goes a bit overboard and attempts a bit too hard for metaphoric correlations. A less obvious approach would have worked much better. The heavy handedness of the third act left me wishing it would end sooner rather than later.
