Ron Howard puts in a strong directorial effort here, though the old people steal the show right out from underneath him. Wilford Brimley looked like he had di-ah-bee-tis back in 1985. It's Don Ameche and Hume Cronyn that do most of the show-stealing. The weaker points of the movie -- that they could have done a million other things with the aliens to make the script more entertaining, more poignant, less cheesy, and less overly simplistic -- are mostly hidden by the actor's performances for at least the first half of it.
Historical footnote: Ron Howard's brother was always ugly.
