Review of Coco Before Chanel (2009) by Caleb M — 28 Nov 2009
A lush, exquisitely produced tale of love and independence. Coco Before Chanel is the best non-biopic biopic this year (better than My One and Only) and the best fashion film as well (beating out the documentary The September Issue). The film that keeps popping in my head while thinking of Coco Before Chanel is Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. Both involve fashion, France and women in society. However, while Marie Antoinette rejoices in the extravagant flair of fashion Coco shows the reinvention of fashion and the transition from women's fashion for men to women's fashion for women.
I did not expect to fall in love with this, but the entire picture is beautiful and engrossing. The end is really what did it for me. It is a fascinating, simple, dreamlike final few minutes.
One of the best and most criminally underrated films of the year.
