Review of Coco (2017) by Anthony K — 20 Mar 2018
I am not a Pixar fan. Ever since..I wanna say Cars, maybe...their films are too high concept for my liking, filled with all sorts of baffling internal logic that serves the purpose of the story and whatever heavy handed lesson they are trying to peddle, but completely destroys my suspension of disbelief.
Coco, then, is a welcome surprise because it (like all of the Pixars I *do* like) it tells a relatively straightforward story and allows its themes to reveal themselves naturally, in a way that does not feel forced.
Inside Out, I'm looking at you. It's also very much a take off of Wizard of Oz, and has the visuals to bolster that lofty comparison.
