Review of Coco (2017) by Mauricio M — 10 May 2018
A movie based on a young boy (Miguel) that dreamed on being a famous musician. Despite his family's despise for music.
The story takes place in Mexico the final days of October, during the festival of "día de los muertos". A Mexican tradition where they honor the dead.
Miguel sees an opportunity to participate in a talent show, but he doesn't have a guitar. He goes to steal Ernesto's the greatest musician of all time, and gets sent to the land of the dead. Miguel needs a blessing before sunrise. He needs to find Ernesto to get his blessing. He meets Hector a person trying to return to the land of the living, and he is willing to help him reunite with his family. Miguel finally performs for the first time and does a really good job.
There was a shocking turn of events revealing the true character of Ernesto, and what he had to do for his success. Miguel changes his families perspective on music in the land of the living as well as in the land of the dead.
Coco projected itself for a younger audience. The writer was showing that family is the most important thing in the world. Even if everything else has to be given up.
