Review of Coco (2017) by Angela P — 14 May 2018
The movie Coco is about a boy who wants to become a musician but interferes with the land of the dead. The film was released in November, 2017. It's also related to the mexican tradition, day of the dead. Coco was successful and beautifully animated movie that had a complex plot.
Coco had traditions, catchy music, and comedy. Coco had many emotional overwhelming scenes that may cause tears. Miguel's dream is to become a musician regardless his family's wishes, but wants to prove his talent. While in the land of the dead, he must get his family's blessing, before he runs out of time. If not, he could actually end up dead.
Miguel needs a guitar for the talent show, minutes later he discovered his great great grandfathers but then enters the land of the dead. He could only return if he never played music again but Miguel didn't agree so he looked for his great great grandfather to get his blessing instead, De la Cruz. However, Miguel finds out De la Cruz isn't his family, but Hector is. Miguel and Hector suspect De la Cruz is a murderer because De la Cruz always wanted to take Hector's music due to jealousy of his fame.
Coco had bright use of colors, mexican traditions, and used great characters to help the movie. It was representing "Dia de los Muertos" to celebrate the only day the family visits the grave along with their favorite foods. The bright color scheme gave a vivid and lifted atmosphere. The characters used in Coco were bilingual and possibly came from mexican backgrounds.
Coco was overall a great movie. It showed how the mexican culture spends this day with their loved ones who are no longer here. Lee Unkrich had a successful movie. In the end. Miguel got what he wanted and Hector became known and remembered.
