Review of Coco (2017) by Anddy H — 22 May 2018

Disney Animation films have explored various cultures. Lee Unkrich, director of film "Coco", manages to build this fantasy in a film that is also reality. The main idea of Coco is based on the Mexican Holiday, The Day of the Dead also known as Dia de los Muertos.

Coco was released in 2017 with a budget cost between $175million and $200million. The film was worshipped for its animation, details, music, emotional story, and respect for the Mexican culture. In fact, neither has Pixar or Disney tackled an aspects of the Mexican culture and their folklore.

It's amazing how the film performs to be life affirming and death obsessed. Basically, the PG rated film imitates a young boy, whose name is Miguel Rivera, obsessed with music, but because of his past his strict ancestors have banned music from their lives and their shoe making business ever since his Great Great Grandfather left his wife Imelda and their daughter, which is the title, Coco to pursue his musician career.

On the day of Dia de los Muertos, Miguel gets in a argument with his Grandmother, and accidentally removes Coco's photo from the ofrenda. He goes and steals Ernesto de la Cruz's guitar to accomplish his dreams of being a musician, but ends up finding himself in the land of the dead.

Miguel has to get back to the land of the living before sunrise or else he'll fully transition into a skeleton and stay there forever. In Miguel's quest, he has to somehow get his family's blessing to be a musician.

He finds a partner to join him in this adventure of his, Hector which turns out to be his real Great Great Grandfather. Coming to find out Ernesto de la Cruz if a huge two-faced backstabbing liar that killed Hector when they were alive just to live the legendary musician lifestyle.

Believing and seeing are two different things, but after seeing Coco, I believe this is by far hands down the best fantasy- reality animated film I have seen.
