Review of Coco (2017) by Celeste C — 24 May 2018
In late 2017, the animated family film Coco became a popular sensation. The directors, Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, known for their work in films such as Ratatouille and Toy Story 2, worked together to bring this story to life.
Coco centers around a young boy, Miguel, and his family. Miguel differs from his family because of his love for music. Miguel's family does not like music due to a conflict that occured in the past. Miguel's determination to play music leads him to be sent to the Land of the Dead. Miguel must return to his world with the blessing of a deceased family member before he gets stuck in the Land of the Dead forever.
To portray the two different worlds, different color schemes are used. There is more of a variety of vibrant colors in the Land of the Dead making it seem more alive. As conflicts come about, darker tones are used. Once they are resolved, brighter tones return.
There are also many changes in the music in the movie. This applies to both the songs sung and the background music. Early in the film, there is more music with a happy feel to it. Later in the film, there is suspenseful music during scenes that put audiences on the edge of their seats. Sad music is played during the heartbreaking scenes. When the conflicts are resolved, upbeat music is sung by the happy characters.
The characters in the movie are all unique. Even in the Land of the Dead, no skeleton is the same. The voice actors help with this. The voices of the characters are fitting and expressive. Many of the actors, such as Anthony Gonzalez, received praise and recognition for their work.
In conclusion, Coco has many elements that audiences love. From the storyline to the visuals many believe Coco will continue to be adored and remembered.
