Review of Coco (2017) by David M — 28 May 2018
Honestly didn't know what to expect when I began watching this, but by the end of my very first viewing it surpassed my expectations and became my favorite Disney film ever--best animated film period really.
I'm white, I won't pretend to know the ins and outs of culture, but this made me want to know. The belief that keeping the thought and memory of our lost ones alive in us keeps our connection with them alive resounded in me.
I genuinely felt for the characters--especially Miguel and Coco. The twists and surprises were just unbelievable. It seemed so far from anything I though possible in an animated film. I may not be Mexican, but my appreciation for their culture and more specifically the holiday known as "The Day of the Dead" just shot through the roof.
I plan to read up much more on Mexican culture as a result of this film.
