Review of Coco (2017) by Carlotta 4 — 28 Nov 2017
Bright and colorful, and... perfectly fine. But I can't be the only one getting tired of these "surprise" villains and plot twists, you knew the instant you met the skeleton comrade what was going to happen, and these surprise villains always get so bad so QUICKLY that it would be refreshing to have a bit more of a moral grey area than a straight black/white good and evil story. Yeah yeah, "Disney doesn't really do those"--but some of the most interesting Disney villains were OBVIOUSLY villaneous from the start (like Frollo and Ursula), and seeing what they chose to do with that was what was interesting. These "out of nowhere" villains have nowhere to escalate to because one moment they're genuinely smiling and likeable and the next they're stabbing you for flimsy reasons.
But anyway, it's a perfectly acceptable kids film and if you like the aesthetic you'll probably get a lot out of it. The plot was way too predictable in my opinion and that's why I've rated it such, to me a 3 star film is "okay." This was an okay film.
