Review of Coco (2017) by Mirtheous — 22 Nov 2017
Coco is a take on the Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos and Disney-fys it. To a few people I know living in Mexico it does a good representation without feeling like it is culture appropriation. Although, I'm sure there will be some out there that might be offended or think it is exploiting the culture/holiday. That is another topic for another post.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and is probably my favorite Pixar movie yet. It has character development and if you let it, emotional weight that builds up as the story progresses.
Visually stunning with great use of color and all that Pixar magic and imagination.
The story is not that complicated so if you're the type who will ruin the movie for yourself by guessing the plot and what happens next then it might not be for you. If you're that type, there is a lot of foreshadowing that is pretty obviously half way through. Don't forget it is a kids movie. They can't make it too complicated.
I recommend this folks who like emotional family friendly movies and who like Pixar and Disney movies. If you are the type to cry at movies then do not forget to bring some tissue. You will cry a couple times.
