Review of Coco (2017) by Marlenne P — 10 May 2018
The Disney/Pixar movie, "Coco" was directed by Lee Unkrich and was released on November 22, 2017. This movie was full of enthusiasm. It's told from 12 year old, Mexican boy named Miguel's point of view, which many young kids can relate to.
Miguel desires to become a musician just like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Unfortunately, his family bans music from their surroundings. The fact that Unkrich includes the Mexican culture in the movie makes it better for Hispanics to understand, since there is both, Spanish and English audio involved.
The movie is full of live and vibrant colors which impacts the audience because that's how Mexico really is during el Día de Los Muertos. In Mexico, families gather together and make an altar for their deceased family members.
They include a picture and the favorite food of the beloved person. Miguel somehow ends up in the Land of the Dead. He wants to find his grandfather to get his blessing in order to become a musician because he loves music and he plays the guitar well.
This movie is brimming with infectious songs that makes us want to sing and maybe even dance all through out the movie. Along the way, he meets Hector, who joins him in the adventure of finding Ernesto de la Cruz.
Ernesto de la Cruz is a well known musician in the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead. Miguel is convinced that de la Cruz is his grandfather, but come to find out, Hector is his real great-great grandfather.
So how in the world was de la Cruz was going to give Miguel his blessing if they weren't even related ? Miguel has to hurry back to the Land of the Living so his grandmother, Elena won't forget her husband.
Who we come to find out that it's Hector. Will he make it before sunrise? In conclusion, Unkrich succeeded when producing this film because this is an empowering and family-friendly movie who helps us connect not only through the Spanish speaking language, but also the Mexican traditions and customs.
It encourages the audience to love and show appreciation towards family and to always follow their dreams.
