Review of Cocaine Cowboys (2006) by Bob M — 23 Jun 2007
If you have seen Scarface then you have to see the true story of the cocaine wars. What a fantastic documentary. The film traces how cocaine sales in Miami built the city and corrupted city hall, banking and nearly the entire police force in Miami.
It follows the paths of high level cocaine dealers and reveals that nearly all of the hundreds of deaths due to cocaine wars in Miami in the early 80's had to do with Griselda Blanco, aka The Godmother.
All of the people who played a role get a part in the fast-moving doc. It is great to hear from both the criminals and law enforcement on the same scenarios. Both sides talk about the rise in murders after the Mariel boats "flushed Cuba's toilets of criminals into Miami".
But they also talk insightfully about how the city skyline was directly financed by narco dollars and how police just gave up the city to the cartels.
