Review of Cobra (1986) by Vincent T — 27 May 2011
This was an inch away from becoming a guilty pleasure.
So, once again, seeing things from the right angle is required. We perfectly know that Cosmatos was aiming towards the right direction. Sly was still in the top of his game, and we were still in the middle of the 80s, the golden era for no-holds-barred action in which the most essential components of filmmaking were as important as dog shit for directors. That's why films like Predator and Commando were successful in what they were set out to do.
Not this time, though. Despite the famously woeful screenwriting only redeemed by hilariously kickass lines (crime is the disease and Sly is the cure; "let's bleed pig"; "this is where the law stops... and I begin"), despite that great aroma of the 80s with its cheesy shots and its streets infested with depravity and crime, despite that great car chase scene and despite the final fight that The Marine (2006) tried to copy so much, in the end, the result is disappointing. Some other attempts were not. So...
46/100.
