Review of Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) by Dimity P — 07 Apr 2009
I really liked this movie. It's pretty much a standard biopic full all the trappings that entails. We get to see Ms. Lynn's rise to fame from meager beginnings along with all the struggles along the way.
Throw in some substance abuse and some foreshadowing of the deaths of influential character. All very standard fare. But it is really well done and what really sets this pic apart are the performances - Sissy Spacek's in particular.
She is just amazing. She makes you believe in the character. Tommy Lee Jones is solid as always, although to me, this is probably the best I have seen him do. Top it off with Ms. Spacek actually singing and performing the songs herself - and amazingly well! Again, it made me believe in the character and her rise to fame.
Good movie.
