Review of Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) by Gustavo H — 09 Aug 2010
It's no surprise that Sissy Spacek won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn. She gives a fearless performance that spans over 20 years of Loretta's life and career. Spacek also recorded her own vocals (as did Beverly D'Angelo, playing Patsy Cline) to add an authenticity to the live sequences.
Apted's pacing is a bit leisurely, but he does a good job of telling the story. You can't get a better review than Lynn saying in the dvd supplements that there are sequences in the film that she cannot stand to watch because they're too realistic and bring back too many bad memories.
