Yes it's formulaic. Let's face it, if you read the blurb you pretty much know how it's gonna end. What I liked about this is that if focused on the sport and the academic progress (montages aside) and didn't get overly bogged down in the private lives of the kids.
Yes they all have shit circumstances, that's the point, no need to dwell on it.
