Review of Clueless (1995) by Charlie M — 23 Feb 2015
Although most teen movies as cast off as bubble gum dreck, there are a few that are simultaneously of their era and timeless. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mean Girls and Clueless all fall under this category. Classics that also manage to entertain adults because they encapsulate an experience that is, in itself, timeless. Even with the MTV soundtrack and laughable fashion, there's a great message in Clueless about finding the value in helping and supporting other people's needs.
Cher should be unbearable, but she is adorable as she 'saves' the hapless Tai from herself, helps her teachers find love, and has the hots for the wrong kind of boy. She was to 90's teen girls as Kevin McCallister was to 90's prepubescent boys. If this movie came out today she would be decimated by a Buzzfeed article about "white privilege," but 20 years ago Silverstone was heralded as the charming 'it' girl of 1995. One would expect Cher to be a dimwit, but she has her own valid version of intellect which makes it quotable (and imitable) to this day. Clueless remains light, bubbly, and insightful as ever.
