Review of Clueless (1995) by Jordan K — 27 Jul 2014
Lately I've been watching a lot of 90s teenybopper films for some reason. Most don't work, and some do. Clueless is in the middle, it's clever but sometimes the over the top annoying valley girls are too much.
The film follows Cher Horowitz, the most valleyest of all valley girls who is obsessed with fashion and doing "good deeds" for fellow classmates (mainly giving them makeovers) while dealing with personal friend/love issues herself, such as trying to convince herself she isn't in love with her stepbrother Josh. Basically, it's a ditzy teen girl spouting 90s quotes like "As if" and "Totally dope".
Well, despite all this it's not awful. There's some little charm in it that makes you enjoy some of it, and the jokes aren't just lazy, and it's hilarious to see the 90s pop culture references in there (Ren and Stimpy on TV, Mentos commercials, etc.) However, some of the characters are really annoying (mainly Tai) and the film obviously displays it as a girl targeted film, which is cool, but it really stretches that's a really girly movie. Eventually Clueless was made into a surprisingly successful ABC sitcom, which, just by the intro, is even girlier than the film. Good movie for teen girls, but incredibly outdated.
