Review of Clue (1985) by Bob V — 21 Jul 2011
Original, yet flawed adaptation of the popular board-game, though very little except the setting, character names & some quick-laugh references are actually retained. The "Clue" gimmick is a bit of a double-edged sword, as it created a lot of buzz for the film, but it also severely limited it.
In any case, the film was not a great success at the time of release, but has gained notoriety as a camp cult classic. One of the more notable gimmicks of the film were the 3 different endings that were tagged on, in reflection of the game-play. Again, this did have its drawbacks, because in the cinema you really would only see one of the possible endings, and you didn't know which one it would be beforehand. Since one of the endings in particular is just plain nonsensical, I'd have felt a bit stiffed had I gotten that one. Luckily the DVD releases have all 3 endings (with the one I also thought was the best) as the "correct" solution.
All in all, Clue is a fun film, with some very funny performances, & with a little goodwill its flaws are not that hard to overlook.
