Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Zanele J — 30 Dec 2012
Review by Zanele Jiane.
Cloverfield is a fantastic ride, witnessing a the demolition of Manhattan through the shaky lens of a camcorder makes you feel you are there.
The film has a lot of borrowed ideas i.e. Monster (Godzilla, King Kong), Disaster (Roland Emmerich), Camcorder (The Blair Witch Project), Military quarantines (28 days later), also there are plenty inspired sequences in this feature like the beheaded statue of liberty, the halfway collapsed building, a showdown in a subway tunnel, all of these are masterfully constructed.
In the heart of unprecedented chaos that even the military backed by hefty funding, is finding hard to subdue, a group of friends set out to go and rescue a friend, trapped in a high rise building. They are inexperienced fighter, have no weapons, are tired, armed with blind resolve. they set out on their goal.
Highly recommended.
