Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Eric R — 10 Apr 2013
Let me start off by saying, if you want a god-like perspective movie where you know everything about anything then you will not like movie. To make it quite clear this movie is about a group of people who are trying to survive the horrific situation around them.
This is not, I repeat NOT, a movie about a monster. There is a monster involved in the movie true, but the story does not revolve around it. They could've stuck anything in the monsters place. Natural disaster, terrorists, you name it.
Basically the monster is not essential. You won't know where it comes from, you won't know any details about it at all. Even you even think that you're going to learn anything about it, then guess what? You'll loathe this movie.
Instead what you get is a concept movie, revolving around a group of youth making all the wrong decisions, all in the name of doing what they think is right. I found the fun part of the film to be just the style of how it is shot.
You can tell production did their best to make this exactly what it looks like a movie shot by a handicam. This is a movie I personally loved. But I'd have to say for everyone else it's going to be a love or hate.
You'll either be thick headed and hate it, or understand what the story is and love it.
