Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Waleed A — 16 Mar 2016
The shaky camera can be sickening and if you came to see a giant monster destroy New York, you're probably going to be disappointed. Yet, Cloverfield is still a thrilling J.J. Abrams-produced thriller.
The special effects are frighteningly realistic, the movie is quite scary since we never feel safe when the monster visits 18 minutes in and though the main characters never participate in an action sequence, it also shows what action scenes would be like for innocent bystanders.
Mainly, getting the hell out of there before they get caught in the crossfires. Cloverfield's actually better to watch on Netflix or on DVD since it greatly makes the movie seem much more like a tape thanks to the power of pausing and rewinding at will.
If you don't watch these idiots (and Lizzy Caplan) bumble around with shaky-cam for 73 minutes, excluding credits you're going to be disappointed. But if you accept the movie for what it is, you're going to find the movie a decent monster movie.
To think the viral marketing campaign was more popular than the movie itself.
