Review of Cloverfield (2008) by James P — 18 Mar 2016
It's been a long time since I've since this film and its just as good as I remembered. Easily one of the better "found footage" films even to this day Cloverfield is about a group of friends celebrating their friend Rob (Michael Stahl-David) going away party in New York city.
During the party the power suddenly goes out and the head of the Statue of Liberty is tossed into the street. Obviously, something is not right. In the confusion of the apparent attack Rob's ex-girlfriend Beth (Odette Annable) calls him begging for his help.
The phone call cuts off and Rob makes it his mission to travel through the chaos of New York to save Beth. Along for the ride are his closest friends. There's Jason (Mike Vogel) his brother, along with Jason's girlfriend Lily (Jessica Ford), Marlena (Lizzy Caplan) the kind of outsider who barely know's Rob and then there's Hud (T.
J. Miller). Hud is the guy we get the most perspective out of the entire film because he's the guy holding the camera the whole time. He provides a lot of comedic relief and really keeps the pace of the film going.
Overall, the movie has small comedic parts, but deep down its a creature feature. The characters are all played by pretty much no name actors (outside of T.J. Miller who in 2016 is getting popular) and it helps because everyone is very likeable.
It's an overall simple story, but there's more deep down about friendship and survival. Great film and if you haven't seen it check it out!
