Review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) by Daniel C — 13 May 2016
Certainly gets top marks for the most unusual film title, I mean who on earth could guess what this was actually about?! Well I suppose having said that, common sense may suggest it has something to do with it raining food, and ultimately that's what it's all about.
When a young inventor stumbles across an invention that controls what delicacies fall from the sky, all looked rosy for the town that had lived on Sardines for the majority of its life. At first it's a mammoth tourist attraction and a big coo for both Flint and the local mayor, but that soon turns to despair once the menu starts getting mutated and threatening to destroy everyone's homes.
Is there a way to reverse such an invention? Of course there is, this is a kids film so it's all just a matter of time. The story I was quite into, and it definitely oozed child appeal. It wasn't remotely funny though, nor did it gave a soundtrack to enjoy, making it as riveting as watching the weather forecast itself.
It didn't really have any iconic superheroes that kids are going to idolise and I imagine the demand for merchandise would be pretty low for forgettable characters like this. It's an odd one really as the movie itself was very captivating without really having any stand out moments.
It did have a subtle undertone of stressing the values of family ties what with the strained relationship between Flint and his father, but it was that subtle, that only a grown adult might notice it.
Not one to be passed up, but not one to jump to the front of your viewing list either. 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' is just ordinary, with a chance of entertainment.
