Review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) by Matthew D — 29 Apr 2013
Movie Matt here with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Based off the children's book of the same name (which I supposedly own), the movie focuses on an aspiring inventor who, in an attempt to solve his town's food shortage (they've been consuming sardines), invents a machine that can turn water into food but excessive orders causes the machine to turn bad, forcing the inventor & his friends to try and stop his own creation.
While a lot of people liked this film when it came out in theaters, I really didn't like this film mainly due to the halfway plot switch (the directors stated they didn't do a straight adaptation of the book) from comedy to disaster drama but while maintaining some comedic elements.
The overabundance of reusing some jokes & the abrupt switch caused me to think "Okay? What Am I Watching Here? Am I Watching A Comedy or A Drama?". While very obviously a comedy, The film touches on very serious themes like an outcast accepting approval of others & his own father, having too much of a good thing can result in VERY bad consequences.
The film redeems itself with its' strong storyline & moral but I'd go as far to call it a "Time Waster" or something to put on for the little kids.
