Review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) by Kevin O — 03 Jun 2013
I was so happy to see a 3D animated film that actually took liberties with the fact that it was an ANIMATED feature to do the zany antics the medium allows you to do. So many 3D animated films (tired of that word yet?) have such a strange focus on realism when it comes to movement.
For example, even as silly as the idea of a house being suspended into the air by balloons is ridiculous, in the film "Up" it's still animated to look as it would if it were to happen in the real world.
Now look at a sequence from "CWACOM", there's this great moment where the main character has to get from point A to point B, and in his path are Tomato Tornadoes, falling candy corn, and a plethora of other deadly giant food.
Physics suddenly don't matter as the hero ducks, jumps, and swerves around the obstacles in the most ridiculous fashion possible. It's hilarious to watch and it works so well. What happened to the days of Looney Toons when we'd shoot Daffy Duck in the face? What happened to the excellent Road Runner cartoons? I say it's high time we bring them back, to remind us why people animate things in the first place.
