Review of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) by Ciaran S — 12 Jul 2018
While slightly inferior to its predecessor thanks to a really obvious villain that the heroes take longer than they should to notice how eeevviillll he is and a slightly anvilicious "your idols may actually be assholes in real life", I found this sequel to the first film to still be a lot of fun.
The visuals are gorgeous. The animators worked their asses off on this movie and, boy does it show. It's a step up from the first film from sure and the unique cartoony animation style really stands out compared to the regular animation styles that Pixar and DreamWorks use in their movies.
Even if you don't like this movie, surely you can't deny just how beautiful the animation is. The jokes, while not up to the Lord/Miller level of the last movie, are still pretty damn hilarious.
The puns. Oh my God, so many food puns. There are a couple of clever puns though, I'll give the movie that. There's the toy-selling character a strawberry named, you guessed it, Barry. He's actually adorable, not cringey and not overexposed in the movie to the point of being just another Minion clone.
In the end, Cloudy 2 is a lot of energetic, smoothly animated fun and part of me actually does wish that a third movie is made. Maybe this time, they'll actually base the story around those "after-the-end" end credits.
