Review of Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) by Hugo G — 11 Dec 2014
Great performances by Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart, who to many might be a breakthrough performance, but in reality it is one of her finest and most natural performances. The movie itself is a very real and truthful take on aging while being an actress in the media. And Binoche completely captures that essence, so devastating and thought-provoking. Also, the cinematography is beautiful, specially in the outdoor locations, but also in more closed locations were it adds a very special texture to the image. Those are mainly the ups of the movie, the downs would probably be, how slow the movie might seem to go or even how simple it feels at times-which sometimes can be a positive but too much becomes tiresome-or how the story might have benefitted with more drama. But still, it is a very good movie driven by excellent performances, and a very well written and directed story by Olivier Assayas.
