Review of Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) by Ian G — 07 Mar 2015
Probably to crittique it simply Clouds of Sils Maria is best considered as the feminine version of Birdman with a middle aged actress played by Juliet Binoche, going to a tribute to the filmmaker who made her a star, being seduced/obliged to pay tribute to him after his sudden death b suicide to return to the project they did together but now in the adult role and have a young upstart, played here by Chloe Moretz, to play the young she originated which tosses her into a career and identity crisis of sorts.
The acting is extremely solid, even by Stewart proving that given the material she can hold her own outside of Twilight and against Oscar winners such as Juliet, and Juliet was deserving of some more awards attention just for her emotional range here.
Plus the cinematography of all of the mountain ranges were gorgeous as well. But that being said was just so meditative and introspective a look into the process of essentially workshopping a play that it was almost too mellow and quiet to a fault to hold the attention of the viewer completely.
But for short bursts not bad at all.
