Review of Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) by Tim M — 17 Aug 2017
Clouds of Sils Maria is directed and written by Olivier Assayas, and it stars Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz in a drama film about an actress who's in a lesbian stage, and problems start to tense up, whether it be from her experiences in the play, or the business relationship with her assistant.
This is the first time that I've seen a film from Olivier Assayas as I heard about this director here or there, and so I figure I'll give this a shot. The main actresses are terrific as Juliette Binoche gives a complex performance, and Kristen Stewart plays her character in a monotone way, but it actually works in terms of what she's going with.
It's beautifully shotted with the landscape of the horizon, and the characters are well done. The only issue that I have with it is that the pacing is really slow, and it's like that the entire film, which for me can be fine enough if the writing is interesting enough, and while the writing by Olivier Assayas is good, the movie wasn't quite there yet to make me interested in it, and that can be a huge issue.
For me in the end, I thought Clouds of Sils Maria is a great movie that I makes me curious enough to see Personal Shopper.
