Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Vincent N — 16 Dec 2013
Where to begin with this movie? Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of the book. The book is so ambitious and incredibly intricate yet broad, that I was skeptical about it being brought to the big screen.
I still don't know if there could be a perfect adaptation. There were quite a few unnecessary, confusing changes that I had a big problem with. The movie tries its best, but acting, directing, and setting suffers considerably the longer the movie plays out.
This is hardly a fault of the movie (which truthfully puts up a good fight to be a beautiful transition). Rather, it is a testimony to just how great and incredibly unique David Mitchell's novel is.
This proves to be a triumphant reality for literature, and a disappointing letdown for the cinema.
