Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Derek B — 17 Jan 2014
This was a complete mess. I'll admit that I never read the source material for this movie, but I've been told that the task of making a decent movie from this book was probably an impossible task.
The Wachowskis prove this to be true. The story zips you through time with the characters loosely connected to the events of their matching souls throughout. Not a single character was focused on enough to form an emotional attachment to.
The action was so spread and disconnected that it really had no impact. In the end, this movie try to be everything...comedy, action, drama, fantasy...and all it ended up being was boring with a completely unsatisfying ending.
I sat through the movie waiting for the big "ah-ha" and all I got was "meh". I've never been a fan of the Wachowskis and I think they are drastically overrated as filmmakers. I see this movie as a failure and I could easily point a figure that them as the reason this failed, but I'm not sure anyone could have made this story succeed on film.
