Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Jon S — 05 Feb 2015
Cloud Atlas is an ambitious film, but stumbles and falters due to choppy editing, ridiculous make-up, and too-obvious CGI. The story has its merit and in what it tries to achieve and bring to the fore-ground is admirable, however, Cloud Atlas lacks consistency or depth.
It definitely deliberately creates a lot of depth, but it's all on show and portrayed without subtlety. Certain scenes are masterfully put together, the music at times is truly beautiful to listen to, and the acting, although sporadic, fits the parts.
There was no miscasting, but rather, the actors were bigger than their characters, which becomes distracting. Cloud Atlas, with all its beauty and glamour, really struggles to come to full-close with established substance.
