Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Annie M — 24 Jul 2015
One of the most beautiful and amazing movies I've ever seen. A cast of unbelievable talented actors at their best, a soul-wrenching soundtrack, gorgeous costumery and scenery, a range of extraordinary effects, and a complicated and rich script. What else does a movie need to be worthy of a box office hit?
It is a tragedy how poorly Cloud Atlas has done over the years, considering that it truly has it all and then some. Taking from the words of other, it is revolutionary, a glittering piece of gold in the pile of trash that is now the movie scene. The ratings on this website do not do it justice, and further proves to me how you cannot rely on critics to vet every movie for you before seeing it. In fact, RT ratings have been habitually unreliable for me, once I've seen the movies myself. (Just let it sink in that the Spongebob has been rated more highly than American Sniper, and Cloud Atlas has been rated only a fraction better than Magic Mike XXL and Pitch Perfect 2...).
I am not compelled by critics' reasonings that this movie is too long and too ridiculous and "messy". (In fact, it wasn't long enough, in my opinion, given the amount of material in the books.) Maybe it's miles above and beyond the dull, repetitive crap, and maybe it really is ahead of this day-and-age, where only certain movie formulas manage to make it to the top.
Whatever is the reasoning behind this rare marvel becoming a "box office flop", I assure you, the critics are wrong! This movie is wonderful and enjoyable (and these are still too weak of words to describe Clout Atlas), albeit composed of very intricately woven storylines.
And every time you watch it, it will possess the novelty and beauty from the very first time.
