Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Epifania A — 26 Sep 2015
"Cloud Atlas", the perfect way to while away time on any flight that will take you more than 8 hours. And this is exactly what I did, enjoying most of the plot's twists and turns - even when the make-up definitively could not make the 'ethnicity' transformations of some characters believable. Beyond being good for killing time, "Cloud Atlas" left me with many a poetic word of wisdom, some of which bear sharing. And so here goes:
Sonmi-451: "Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we're bound to others. Past and present. And with each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.".
Sonmi-451: "Knowledge was a mirror and for the first time in my life, I was allowed to see who I was and who I might become.".
Sonmi-451: "To be, is to be perceived. And so to know thyself is only possible through the eyes of the other.".
Robert Frobisher: "All boundaries are conventions, waiting to be transcended. One may transcend any convention if only one can first conceive of doing so. Moments like this, I can feel your heart beating as clearly as I feel my own, and I know that separation is an illusion. My life extends far beyond the limitations of me.".
Timothy Cavendish: "Freedom, the fatuous jingle of our civilization. But only those of us deprived of it have an inkling of what it really is.".
Louisa Rey: "You have to do whatever you can't not do.".
