The central message of "Cloud Atlas" borders on the simplistic but is executed with such joyful exuberance, that I couldn't help but be enchanted by this movie. It's messy and complex, maybe a bit cheesy at times, and often gets tripped up by its own ambitions, but the Wachowskis brand of all-out sincerity is the kind of creative power that science-fiction has been lacking for ages.

A lot of the makeup effects are a wonky, and even though the race-altering of the various characters elicits a rather lovely metaphorical beauty, there's perhaps something to be said about the ugly legacy of yellowface and the like in Hollywood (Because all things considered, the cast of "Cloud Atlas" is still mostly white).

Overall, a wonderful experience.
