Review of Cloud Atlas (2012) by Kyle B — 12 Feb 2015
It's been almost a week since I saw this but it has given me some time to think about it. I have been back and forth going for a 4 or a 3 1/2 but I think I'll stick with a 4. It was ambitious and maybe only half of the storylines really were interesting but the ones that work are truly fascinating.
Jim Broadbant is the star for this movie. Yes Hanks and Berry are the headliners but Broadbant delivers in each segment because he is one of out greatest actors and will deliver a wonderful performance no matter the role.
Hanks and Berry were good in certain segments but weren't overall the best of the cast. The make up, production design, and costumes are spectacular and I remember at the time how big of a deal people were making over this movie not making the short list for Make Up at the Oscars and I respect their outrage.
The Wachowski's have a wonderful imagination that works and sometimes doesn't but they are ambitious film makers with a knack for originality. It was a nice surprise to see Hugh Grant and Susan Sarandon pop up too.
I know I say this a lot but this movie suffers from a very long running time. Like I said, just some of these segments weren't all that interesting. Still, by the end of the movie, you'll feel accomplished with a different and original movie.
