Review of Closer (2013) by Kinzi B — 03 Dec 2009
Watching Closer is similar to realizing that you've been lying to yourself. It's very painful, its always sad, and its never easy. In doing so trust is laid out over the coals of dishonesty, fried to a crisp, dehydrated and cauterized, tough as leather and permanently scarred.
Dan is a sensitive man who falls for a disarming wisp, Jane. (A+B) He later meets an professionalle intelligente, Anna, (A + C) of whom he is thoughtfully curious in an inconsiderate way (A x A). She attempts honestly, yet can't help but desire the guilt. She meets too bold a gentlemen, Larry, of the perverse persuasion (C + D). There's a lot to do with class, which is nice to see addressed directly in a film (if C x D V A x B => F). Sex is covered too. Desire, jealousy, love. Larry and Jane communicate the most freely and clearly, but can't get past the possibility of possibility. Each end up loving one another, never quite enough though. And that little hated bit is tossed out in front of the two, like an abomination thrown onto the dinner table. And there it sits, quite and prodigious, growing at a too rapid rate. Things get messy ( (A x B) x (C x D) ) (do not use FOIL method) and no one ends up happy.
The dialogue is wonderful. Well performed. Sweet when it is not cruel and vicious. See it with your boyfriend and hope that awkward silence is the next logical step.
