Review of Closer (2004) by Atanu B — 21 May 2010
I really liked this movie. Great acting, in a solid drama. Some might accuse this storyline of affairs to be simplistic or like a soap opera, but I think it has subtelties that go far deeper into the psychology of how relationships can mean different things to so many different people. For one it's being in love, for another it's obsessive love, for another it's convenience, for some it's even revenge, and on and on.
The sexual repartee is racy and keeps you intrigued. My one criticism is a littel character problem. We only find out who the characters are through their relationship to one another. We know Larry the dermatologist is lonely, likes rough sex, and is one vindictive mother-f_ker, while Alyce is in need of emancipation and Daniel is a bit of a user. Anna seems to be wholly without character. But other than that, the film leaves food for thought, in the sense of how two people in a relationship have such complex needs, which can't always be satisfied. Overall, I found the characters, with the exception of Alyce who was on survival-mode, to be somewhat shallow. None of us can have our needs met all of the time ... doesn't mean we run and have sex with the first person who tells us we're beautiful. LOL.
