Review of Closer (2004) by Allan C — 16 Mar 2013
Director Mike Nichols revisits "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "Carnal Knowledge" territory in this uncomfortably intimate story about four tortured characters. In lesser hands, this film could easily have slipped into over-the-top melodrama, but with Nichols smart direction and a terrific cast (Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen and the normally annoying Julia Roberts), this film offers a memorable, though not always pleasant, film experience.
Certainly not for all tastes, but if you're a fan of Nichols work, you should definitely check this one out. And I also dug some of the soundtrack choices and am going to have to checkout some more Damien Rice.
