Review of Closer (2004) by John M — 03 Oct 2009
Closer is one of those movies, whose themes are firmly rooted in the drama of the human condition, and deals with issues, which won't be everybody's cup of tea. That said, for me, it is a very interesting area that the film delves into. Anything involving relationships and matters of the heart has always intrigued me. It is an aspect of life that can have the most profound affect on people. Depending on an individual's situation, relationships can render them delirious with happiness, miserable as a wet Monday in January or just plan cuckoo.
Such extremes of emotion need to be handled with care, especially in drama; the film coming off as farcical when it's meant to be a serious examination of human emotions would never do. Consequently, a film like this is only as good as the acting talent therein. I'm happy to say that these actors are good. These characters are made real, with real flaws and inadequacies.
Closer is a beautifully told, excellently executed story that is both insightful and compelling.
