Review of Closer (2004) by Liz — 04 Nov 2010
Closer stars four very famous and talented actors, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen. Roberts, Law and Portman stood out spectacularly in the film more than any actors in a while have. Mike Nichols made a great modern "romance" based on what love really is, intangible. What happens when the love you feel isn't tangable? Is it even real? What if everyone is just a rebound compared to one? We follow Dan, Anna, Larry and Alice as their lives and relationships unfold and burn. Though it is a movie based on love it is also based on the concept that love isn't forever no matter how hard we want to believe that it is. Nichols made it honest, distrubing, depressing, strange, and yet with a certian sense of happy enlightenment. Though the movie is too depressing for some audiences it is brutally honest, which makes it depressing as a social satire. Definatly a movie that deserves more credit and fame than it has, if not for the superb acting and direction, then for the message.
"Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off. but it's better if you do.".
