Review of Closer (2004) by Mimi S — 18 Jan 2014
I worked on one of the scenes from this in my drama class, so I really wanted to see the film. The acting was fairly decent, though could have been better in some of the scenes. Natalie Portman was actually really good in this, I think that she was the strongest out of all of leads. I enjoy watching relationship dramas so this is my kind of film. Closer is based on the play by Patrick Marber and is a drama about two couples; Dan (Jude Law) and Alice (Natalie Portman) and Anna (Julia Roberts) and Larry (the very tasty Clive Owen). The story is about deception, lies and affairs. Dan and Anna are having an affair, hurting their respective partners who are madly in love with them. I really don't get why you would go back to someone who has cheated on you. I just found the story a bit confusing in parts and the characters a bit pathetic. However this film was still really good and really gripping and the drama was really intense. The only thing I didn't like was the characters; I found them all a bit pathetic and there's no explanation for why it ends the why it does, I found that a bit confusing. Still a really powerful drama and I like that it's set in London.
Grade: A-/B+.
